Scar after cheilectomy
It has been 6 months now, and - so far - I am very happy with the outcome. There is very little residual pain, not interfering with any activities - long distance running, walking, digging in the garden, or whatever this could be. The only time I was reminded I had a problem with the foot was while putting a winter boot on - having to bend my big toe to get the boot on causes some inconvenience, but it absolutely nothing compared to what it used to be. This week I am going to try skiing - this should be fine as long as soon as I get the boot on....

I took a look at your foot, and I'm comparing it to mine (albeit, minus the hair:) ) and I wonder if you, too, had a swelling or a bump where a typical bunion forms. My surgeon shows me my X ray now that I'm 4 months post op, and the bone is normal, but I have a slight bulge. She is describing it as soft tissue swelling. I was back to running 5 weeks post op, and I wondered if I compromised the healing process. She didn't and still does not think so. I have the same kind of very mild, nearly imperceptible discomfort you describe in your 2 year anniversary comment. I'm very glad I had this surgery, but I wondered about this swelling.
Hi Marilyn, good to hear from you again. I am not sure if I had anything like that, but I have to admit that I did not care to look at my foot too closely. I definitely had some occassional swellings for many months after the cheilectomy; the recovery process seems to be very long - even the last three months (i.e. since the 2nd anniversary, which was in May) have brought further improvement. I hardly ever feel any discomfort now, actually I sometimes forget that I ever had any problems with my foot.
DeleteI hope your bulge stops bothering you very soon, and in two years time you too will not remember the surgery!
Hi- I am thankful for this blog. It's helping me a lot. I'm three weeks post- op and feel like I have great range of motion and not too much pain. My biggest issue is that I still have some swelling. Not really sure how long to expect that to last. I have been back to dr once (at two weeks post-op) to have stitches removed. I go back at 6 weeks but hopefully swelling is gone by then. How long did you have swelling? I have only been able to wear a flip flop type sandal or my oh so lovely ortho sandal so far. Also, did you use anything on your scar? It looks great.
ReplyDeleteBeth, from what you have written it seems that your surgery went well, and the outcome is really good. And your foot does need more time. The swelling lasted for several months, and the photos of the scar were taken 6 months after the surgery. I did not use anything on the scar. Give it 10-12 weeks from now - at least. Also try super-sized trainers (aka sneakers...) if you go to the gym.
Deletedid u have pain as u did before the surgery during the first 4 weeks? Not that Throbbing pain but that toe pain? I'm bout to be 4 weeks post op And still feel the same pain a little bit as I did before surgery. I don't know if it's because of the swelling or not or because I started doing the excersise told to do. It just started to feel this way
ReplyDeleteI have had a cheilectomy 5 months ago I have chronic pain worse than before the surgery. The pain is radiated thru my knee and hip into the pelvic area. I have been having ultrasonic therapy on my foot for pain with not much change. Going to have new xrays done on foot and hip this week.
ReplyDeleteI’m only in day 8 of my first of 2 feet, and just saw the hideous scar for the first time yesterday. Yours looks great! Barely even noticeable on the photo. Can’t wait for mine to look like that!
